Smith OT & Driving COVID-19 Protocol

To keep you, our medically-vulnerable clients and ourselves safe, we have implemented the following COVID-19 safety protocols. Please take a minute to review and understand these protocols. If you have any questions, please call.

1.  The day before your appointment
  • We will call you on the day prior to the scheduled appointment.
  • Over the phone, we will conduct the Occupational Therapy interview that we normally conduct in person.
  • This will decrease the amount of time we will be exposed to each other.

2.  The day of your appointment
  • You will need to bring your own, securing fitting mask.
  • We will first verify that your therapist is healthy. If there is any concern, we will call and reschedule your appointment.
  • We will then check your check temperature and oxygen saturation levels. If you have a temperature above 100 or an oxygen level below 93, we will need to reschedule your appointment for a time when you are in better health.
  • You will be directed to the restroom in order to wash and sanitize your hands.

3.  During on-road testing
  • You and your therapist will both wear masks.
  • If weather permits, two windows of the vehicle will be open at all times to increase airflow.
  • We will use a washable seat cover for the driver and accompanying family member or caregiver.

4.  After your appointment
  • We will roll down all car windows to air out the car.
  • We will wipe down all points of contact within the vehicle.
  • We will wipe down all points of contact in the testing office.

With your help, we can all stay safe!

Smith OT & Driving Rehabilitation Services provides medical evaluation, treatment, equipment, strategies, and training for people with vision, physical, and cognitive conditions that may affect their ability to drive.

Driving is an integral part of our daily lives. It fosters the independence and freedom needed to get to the activities that we enjoy, and can be integral in fulfilling the responsibilities in our lives. Driving affects our emotional well-being as it provides an efficient means to connect with friends and family. Gaining and maintaining our driving ability affects our sense of confidence, autonomy and participation in familiar life roles.

However, learning to drive can be particularly challenging for teenagers with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, cerebral palsy, and osteogenesis imperfecta. Senior drivers may experience increasing difficulty with driving as their physical and cognitive skills change. Adults who have experienced a significant illness or injury, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, or multiple sclerosis often need help regaining their driving skills. This may include learning compensatory strategies or instruction in the use of adaptive driving equipment.
